Super cool Techo: WildCharge Skins Enable Wireless Charging Of iPod, iPhone

From John Laposky at TWICE Magazine

Boulder, Colo. — Wireless power technology supplier WildCharge announced today the availability of WildCharge skins for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, which enable the popular Apple devices to be charged wirelessly.

Multiple devices may be charged simultaneously using WildCharge’s pad and skins.

The skins are protective, form-fitting cases that transfer wire-free power from the Pad to the device inside the skin as soon as it is placed on the pad. The pad and skins deliver full power to multiple devices, allowing them to simultaneously charge together.

“The market is demanding a move towards wire-free charging, and WildCharge is thrilled to answer that call in adding Apple devices to our lineup of commercially available products,” said WildCharge chairman and CEO Dennis Grant.

T. Boone Pickens Gets Behind Barrio Logan Carmaker

Startup Plans to Build in Old GM Plant

By NED RANDOLPH
San Diego Business Journal Staff

A startup San Diego carmaker backed by one of the largest Silicon Valley venture capital firms said June 17 that it would build environmentally friendly cars in an idled General Motors plant in Louisiana, in a deal heavily publicized by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

V-Vehicle is under a non-disclosure agreement and won’t talk about business plans or product specifics, said spokesman Joe Fisher.

Frank Varasano, a San Diego native and former Booz Allen Hamilton and Oracle executive, founded the automaker in 2006.

Venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers funded V-Vehicle’s first round exclusively, between $15 million and $18 million. That round closed in November 2007, said Fisher.

Online Balloting Holds Promise for Increasing Voter Turnout

Ease, Low Costs Overcoming Resistance

By NED RANDOLPH
San Diego Business Journal Staff

The world’s second largest democracy, the United States, arguably takes the prize for lackluster voter turnout.

California’s May 19 special election cost the state $60 million — ironically for residents to consider budget reduction measures — yet attracted 20 percent voter participation.

“The cost per vote was extraordinary,” says Lori Steele, CEO of Everyone Counts, a San Diego software company that conducts digital elections around the world.

Car X-Ray to Place Spectrum On Fast Track, Firm Predicts

By NED RANDOLPH
San Diego Business Journal Staff

Spectrum San Diego has introduced a product that can X-ray moving cars and light trucks for explosives, contraband and stowaways at busy inspection sites.

CarSCAN, which debuted three weeks ago at a security conference in Virginia, can scan vehicles at normal checkpoint speeds of 5-10 mph, giving the operator enough time to divert the vehicle for a secondary inspection.

“The X-ray dose is so low it’s safe for the drivers, which allows them to stay in the vehicles so you don’t sacrifice throughput for security purposes,” said Rich Helstrom, vice president of marketing for Spectrum San Diego, which is based in the Rancho Bernardo area. “You can look at a car every five to seven seconds. … You can imagine what this might do for entry into the U.S. at the San Ysidro border.”

Qualcomm Raises Guidance

Qualcomm on June 11 increased financial guidance for the quarter ending June 28, citing increased demand for its mobile chipsets, but cautioned that the financial crisis was still hurting the value of its investments.

The chipmaker boosted guidance on revenues and operating income but held off on providing earnings per share guidance due to possible unrealized losses in the upcoming quarter.

Quarterly revenue estimates increased to $2.67 billion to $2.77 billion, up from $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion.

Recruiting Generation Y

By NED RANDOLPH
San Diego Business Journal Staff (published April 2008)

Kids these days, with their hair styles and their cell phones.

A new generation is entering the work force with a rather peculiar set of expectations and behavior patterns. Raised on modern technology — personal computers, cell phones, cable TV — they expect higher salaries, good benefits and the potential for advancement.

Imagine the nerve.

These are the findings of a myriad of studies, surveys, ‘Webinars’ along with staffing firms that are paying particularly close attention to the new crowd — called Generation Y — to figure out what makes them

An estimated 80 million strong, Gen-Y workers aged 21-28 may end up changing the culture of companies.

They expect results more quickly. They see no government safety net at the end of their careers. And having been micromanaged by their parents just a text message away, they expect constant feedback
from their supervisors.

“They actually are different,” said Gregg Ward, a management consultant and president of CUSTOMatrix Inc. in San Diego.

Loop’d Network Racing Along, Projects 40% Growth in ’09

By NED RANDOLPH
San Diego Business Journal Staff

Loop’d Network, a San Diego startup that provides an online social network for action sports enthusiasts, recently closed on an $800,000 funding round to accelerate its e-commerce initiative to put action sports brands front and center of the athletes who use them.

The 18-employee business formed in 2007 is set to grow 40 percent this year, according to founder and CEO Scott Tilton.

Loop’d helps athletes promote themselves by networking with each other and finding sponsorships. It’s also a place where companies can zero in on a young demographic to sell their products. All of that brings attention and sales commissions to the firm, which became profitable in December, says Tilton.
